As uncertainty and vulnerability increase with the use of public transportation, people encounter various unpredictable circumstances to which the Government of India took necessary measures by bringing an enforcible law to have an eye on.
Automotive Industry Standard shortened as AIS 140, is a set of norms published by ARAI (Automotive Research Association of India) which is designed explicitly to obtain complete authority over public transportation to make travel/transportation hassle-free and it deals with the necessary safety features required on government and commercial transport.
This plan was initiated by the Indian government in November 2016 and got its official form in May 2017. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) declared in an announcement that, from Jan 1, 2019, any new commercial vehicle to be registered must contain AIS 140.
Following, several auto-parts and GPS device manufacturers started to develop AIS-140 compliant devices. Presented them for certification and got certified when it was deemed to be fit.
MoRTH (Ministry of Road Transport and Highway) made it necessary all-over India for all commercial vehicles whether run by the government or private entities, will have to comply with AIS-140. The types of transports are listed below:
- Inner city and Inter-city public transports
- Ambulance and other Emergency Vehicles
- Car and Bus Fleet Owned privately
- Employee Transportation – Buses/Cabs
- Educational Institution’s fleet
- Taxi-hailing service providers
AIS 140 is designed to obtain a real-time position using the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), IRNSS and it can fetch the transportations’ performance information. It must also contain one or more panic/SOS buzzers depending on the length of the vehicle.
This device has to be compliant with AIS-140, by ensuring that:
- It can transmit location, speed, and time data to the backend control servers (government authorized) using a GSM/GPRS network.
- Transmit the data to at least two different IP addresses and an additional IP address for an emergency response system. It should have an emergency/panic button that broadcasts alerts to a configured IP address.
- The device must have an internal power backup of at least four hours.
- It must support minimum hardware configuration standard, data storage and forwarding mechanism, and over-the-air updates.
So AIS-140 is a must as per Government norms.
